Overview

LASK in brief

LASK, the Linzer Athletik-Sport-Klub, traces its football team to Linzer Sportclub, founded in Linz in 1908. Albert Siems, head of the royal post-office garage in Linz, is credited with setting it up. Its players later joined the football section of Athletiksportklub Siegfried, a heavy-athletics club dating from 1899, and the name Linzer Athletik-Sport-Klub was adopted in September 1919. The club plays in black and white. After a 1997 merger with city rivals FC Linz it was called LASK Linz, and it went back to plain LASK in 2017. Since February 2023 its home has been the Raiffeisen Arena on the Gugl in Linz.

In 1965 it became the first club from outside Vienna to win the Austrian championship, and it also won the Austrian Cup that year for a double under coach Frantisek Bufka. Leaner decades followed, with relegations in 1978, 1989, 2001 and 2011, bankruptcy proceedings in 1995 and a refused licence in 2012 that sent the club down to the third tier. LASK returned to the Bundesliga in 2017 and reached the Europa League round of 16 in 2020. In 2025-26 it won a second double, beating Altach 4-2 after extra time in the cup final. In August 2026 it reached the Champions League league phase for the first time.
