Overview

Hearts in brief

Heart of Midlothian, known as Hearts, were formed in Edinburgh in 1874 by a group of friends from the Heart of Midlothian Quadrille Assembly Club, a dance club, who adopted association rules that year; the exact date was never recorded. They are the oldest football club in the Scottish capital. The name comes from the historic county and the Heart of Midlothian mosaic on the Royal Mile, which also inspired the heart-shaped crest. The colours are maroon and white, and the club has played at Tynecastle Park in Gorgie since 1886.

Hearts won the Scottish league in 1894-95 and 1896-97 and four Scottish Cups between 1891 and 1906. Tommy Walker, manager from 1951 to 1966, brought the best era: league titles in 1957-58, when the team scored a Scottish top-flight record 132 goals, and 1959-60, the 1956 Scottish Cup and four League Cups. Further Scottish Cups followed in 1998, 2006 and 2012. Hearts lost the 1985-86 title on goal difference on the final day, were first relegated in 1977, and went down again in 2014 and 2020. In 2025-26 they finished second after a 3-1 final-day defeat at Celtic.
