Overview

Kilmarnock in brief

Kilmarnock date their founding to January 1869, when a group of local sporting enthusiasts called a meeting of the "Kilmarnock Foot-ball Club". They first played to rugby-style rules, formally constituted the club in October 1872 and took up association rules in 1873-74 after joining the new Scottish Football Association. The nickname Killie is the Scottish term for the town. The team plays in blue and white and has used the present Rugby Park site since 1899. Since a 2020 naming deal the ground has been called BBSP Stadium Rugby Park.

Kilmarnock played in the first official Scottish Cup match, against Renton in 1873, and joined the Scottish League in 1895. They won the Scottish Cup in 1920 and 1929. Willie Waddell's side won the club's only league title in 1964-65. They beat Hearts 2-0 at Tynecastle on the last day to take it on goal average, then reached the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup semi-finals in 1966-67. A third Scottish Cup followed in 1997, and a first League Cup in 2012 with a 1-0 win over Celtic. Relegated in 2021, they came back up as Championship winners in 2022.
