Colchester, who arrived on the back of four straight defeats, struggled to make an impression despite committing 14 fouls to Southampton's five as they attempted to disrupt their opponents' rhythm. Southampton dominated possession at 74 percent and outshot the hosts 23 to 12, though both sides managed five shots on target, reflecting Colchester's resilience in front of goal even as they were pinned back for long spells.
The result continued Southampton's mixed recent form, having drawn and won in their last two league outings before this cup success, while Colchester's winless run stretched further under Danny Cowley.
Goalkeeper Daniel Peretz was Southampton's top-rated performer with an 8.9 rating despite not being involved in the goals, while Manning's assist for Larin's opener also stood out.
