PSV Eindhoven share spoils with Shakhtar Donetsk in Champions League opener
PSV Eindhoven and Shakhtar Donetsk shared the points in a 1-1 draw at Philips Stadion as the UEFA Champions League league stage got under way. P. Bosz's side had led at half-time only in name, since it was Shakhtar who went into the interval ahead despite trailing on the night's overall run of play.
AI-assisted match report written from official match data.
Gleiker Mendoza broke the deadlock in first-half stoppage time, finishing off a move started by Isaque to send Shakhtar in at the break with a 1-0 lead. PSV responded quickly after the restart, with Sergiño Dest levelling matters in the 48th minute after Armando Obispo supplied the assist, and the score stayed level from there to full time.
PSV had the better of the possession and territory, dominating the ball for 54 percent of the match and outshooting their visitors 10 to 8, though only two efforts from each side found the target. Shakhtar's indiscipline was notable, with six yellow cards shown to A. Turan's players compared with three for the hosts, yet neither side had a man dismissed.
Mendoza's stoppage-time strike before the break proved the difference-maker for Shakhtar on the night, earning him the highest rating on the pitch at 7.17. Dest's leveller for PSV, arriving three minutes into the second half, was enough to secure a share of the points for the hosts.
PSV's 54 percent share of possession reflected their greater control of the ball, even as the scoreline finished level.
