Araújo strike earns Uruguay draw against Saudi Arabia
Saudi Arabia and Uruguay shared the points in a 1-1 draw in their World Cup Group Stage - 1 opener at Hard Rock Stadium. Abdulelah Al-Amri put the hosts ahead just before the break, but Maximiliano Araújo restored parity for Marcelo Bielsa's side with 10 minutes remaining to deny Georgios Donis a first victory in the tournament.
AI-assisted match report written from official match data.
Al-Amri's 41st-minute finish gave Saudi Arabia a half-time lead they had done little to deserve on the run of play, having spent much of the opening period without the ball. Uruguay dominated territory and chances throughout, and their pressure eventually told when Araújo levelled in the 80th minute to make it 1-1, a scoreline that held until the final whistle.
Despite falling behind, Uruguay controlled proceedings with 67 percent of possession and produced 27 shots to Saudi Arabia's seven, ten of them on target compared with the hosts' three. Maurizio Mariani booked one Saudi Arabia player during a contest in which Saudi Arabia committed 11 fouls to Uruguay's six, reflecting the territorial gap between the sides.
Araújo scored the equaliser that secured a share of the spoils for Uruguay and finished with a rating of 7.5, matched only by teammate Mathías Olivera among the listed performers.
Uruguay's 27 shots to Saudi Arabia's seven underlined how one-sided the balance of attacking play was despite the scoreline finishing level.
