Match report
Belgium hit New Zealand for five in World Cup group stage rout
Belgium overwhelmed New Zealand 5-1 in Group Stage - 3 of the World Cup at BC Place, a result that lifted Rudi Garcia's side comfortably while leaving Hervé Renard's hosts with a heavy defeat. Leandro Trossard's first-half strike put the visitors ahead and they never let the advantage slip.
AI-assisted match report written from official match data.
Trossard opened the scoring in the 28th minute and doubled it early in the second half, converting a Hans Vanaken assist in the 50th to make it 0-2. Kevin De Bruyne extended the lead in the 66th minute before New Zealand pulled one back through E. Just in the 84th, a rare bright moment for the home side.
Belgium responded almost immediately, with Romelu Lukaku restoring the three-goal cushion in the 86th minute after a Nicolas Raskin assist, then turning provider himself for Alexis Saelemaekers to complete the scoring deep into stoppage time. The 1-5 finish reflected a match Belgium dominated territorially and in front of goal throughout.
De Bruyne capped a dominant Belgian display with a goal and the top rating on the pitch at 9.0, while Trossard's brace either side of half-time set the tone for the rout.
Belgium's 35 shots to New Zealand's six underlined the gulf in attacking threat between the sides.
