Profile
Matheus Cunha is a Brazilian forward whose running with the ball can turn midfield possession into a scoring chance. Often receiving between midfield and defence, towards the left, he can turn to face goal and drive forward before shooting or finding a teammate. His threat combines carrying, creation and finishing.
Born in João Pessoa on 27 May 1999, he left home as a teenager to develop at Coritiba. He later recalled travelling alone across Brazil after the club offered him a place. In 2017 he moved to Switzerland with Sion, then joined RB Leipzig in 2018.
He moved to Hertha Berlin in January 2020. He received his first call-up to Brazil’s senior squad in September that year, although he did not yet make his debut. Atlético Madrid signed him in August 2021.
Wolves brought him to England on loan in January 2023. He scored a hat-trick away to Chelsea during the 2023/24 campaign and followed it with 15 Premier League goals in 2024/25. His ability to carry the ball forward also gave teammates chances to shoot.
He joined Manchester United in June 2025. On 25 January 2026, he came off the bench to curl an 87th-minute winner from distance in a 3–2 victory at Arsenal. It was a striking example of the danger he can create from outside the penalty area.
With Brazil’s Olympic team, he won gold at the Tokyo Games, held in 2021. Cunha scored the opening goal in the final against Spain on 7 August; Brazil won 2–1 after extra time, with Malcom scoring the winner.
At the 2026 World Cup, he scored twice against Haiti and once against Scotland before Brazil were eliminated by Norway in the round of 16. During the tournament, he explained that his role could alternate between centre-forward and creator, moving away from the front line to help build attacks before finishing as a striker. That flexibility helps explain why his contribution extends beyond goals.
Matheus Cunha currently plays for Manchester United as a forward. He has represented Brazil internationally.
