Profile
Bruno Guimarães is a Brazilian midfielder who links ball-winning with forward passing. He can protect the defence or operate farther up the pitch, looking for passes that release a runner beyond the opposition. His value comes from being involved in both the recovery of possession and the attack that follows.
Born on 16 November 1997, he began playing football at Vasco da Gama before leaving home as a teenager to join Audax in São Paulo. In a later interview, he recalled missing his parents during that move and described learning to live away from them as an important part of his development.
He progressed through Athletico Paranaense before joining Lyon in 2020. Juninho, then Lyon’s sporting director, helped persuade him to make the move. Guimarães later credited his time in France with developing his physical strength, alongside the technical game that had taken him from Brazil to Europe.
Newcastle United signed him from Lyon in January 2022. In March 2025, he captained Newcastle to a 2–1 League Cup final victory over Liverpool at Wembley. It was the club’s first domestic trophy in 70 years, giving his spell on Tyneside a defining achievement.
With Brazil, he won Olympic gold at Tokyo 2020, the tournament played in 2021. He later started all five of Brazil’s matches at the 2026 World Cup, where their run ended in a 2–1 defeat by Norway in the round of 16.
He moved from Newcastle to Arsenal in August 2026. The transfer followed a period in which he had shown he could play at the base of midfield or make longer forward runs from a more advanced central position, giving coaches different ways to use his passing and defensive work.
Premier League analysis of his Newcastle performances highlights the detail behind that versatility: passes through gaps to send Alexander Isak towards goal, and ball recoveries from deep midfield to areas closer to the opposition goal.
Bruno Guimarães currently plays for Arsenal as a midfielder. He has represented Brazil internationally.
