Profile
Anthony Gordon is an English forward whose pace matters both when carrying the ball and when running beyond defenders. Starting from the left, he can drive towards the box, cut inside to shoot or slide a pass between opponents. That choice between carrying and releasing the ball makes him a useful outlet when a team breaks forward.
Born in Liverpool on 24 February 2001, he spent time in Liverpool’s youth system before joining Everton’s academy. His first-team debut followed in December 2017. He moved to Newcastle United in January 2023, taking the next step after establishing himself in Everton’s senior side.
His first full Newcastle season, 2023/24, produced 11 goals and ten assists in the Premier League, and the club named him its Player of the Year. His threat included arriving at the far post as well as carrying the ball from deep: against Wolves in March 2024, he scored from a cross and helped create another goal with a long run and pass.
International football also showed his ability to work through the centre. Lee Carsley used him as a mobile central forward in England’s victorious 2023 Under-21 European Championship campaign. Two goals and an assist accompanied UEFA’s Player of the Tournament award. He made his senior England debut against Brazil in March 2024.
Gordon contributed to Newcastle’s 2025 League Cup triumph by scoring in both legs of the semi-final against Arsenal. He missed the final through suspension, but his goals had helped secure the 4–0 aggregate win that took Newcastle to Wembley.
In February 2026, he scored four first-half goals in Newcastle’s 6–1 Champions League play-off win away to Qarabağ. A move to Barcelona followed in May 2026, extending a career that had already taken him from academy football on Merseyside to European competition with Newcastle.
At the 2026 World Cup, Gordon scored England’s opening goal in their semi-final against Argentina, finishing Morgan Rogers’ cross. England lost that match 2–1 but went on to beat France in the third-place match, securing their best men’s World Cup finish since 1966.
Anthony Gordon currently plays for Barcelona as a left winger. He has represented England internationally.
