Profile
Lewis Miley is an English midfielder whose development has taken him from a childhood centre-forward role into midfield and, later, senior matches at right-back. His passing into the penalty area and movement to meet crosses offer two ways he can influence an attack.
Born in Stanley, he joined Newcastle United's academy at seven. Academy coach Mark Atkinson described a progression from striker to attacking midfielder, then into deeper positions to involve him more in games. By under-18 level, Miley was playing on either side of central midfield, learning to contribute from positions further from goal.
His Premier League debut came away to Chelsea on 28 May 2023, making him Newcastle's youngest player in the competition. In December that year, his first senior goal against Fulham also made him the club's youngest Premier League goalscorer.
One example of his creative play came against Chelsea in November 2023. Receiving Anthony Gordon's pass, Miley found Alexander Isak inside the box to create the opening goal in a 4–1 win. It was a direct connection between midfield and the striker: Miley supplied the final pass that allowed Isak to finish the move.
He can also be the player arriving to finish a move. Against Nottingham Forest in February 2025, he met Lewis Hall's cross and drove a shot past Matz Sels during a 4–3 victory. Alongside the Chelsea assist, that goal illustrates the difference between supplying an attack and joining it.
His international development included starting England Under-21s' 2–0 win in Kazakhstan in September 2025. That December, he came off the bench at Bayer Leverkusen and headed in Gordon's cross in a 2–2 draw, becoming Newcastle's youngest Champions League goalscorer.
A different assignment followed against Fulham in the December 2025 League Cup quarter-final. Playing at right-back, Miley headed the stoppage-time winner and received the competition's Player of the Round award in January 2026. Later that month, he also wore Newcastle's captain's armband during the closing stages of their Champions League win over PSV, having entered at half-time.
Lewis Miley currently plays for Newcastle as a central midfielder.
