Profile
Alexis Mac Allister is an Argentine midfielder who connects possession to attack through his positioning and passing. He finds pockets of space between opponents, releases teammates running beyond the defence and keeps moving after his own pass, making himself available again closer to goal.
Born in Santa Rosa, he learned the game at Club Social Parque before progressing through Argentinos Juniors’ youth ranks to their first team. Brighton signed him in January 2019, initially loaning him back to Argentinos and then to Boca Juniors before bringing him to England.
At Brighton he contributed from different midfield positions: protecting the defence and winning possession under Graham Potter, then also operating nearer the forwards under Roberto De Zerbi. His ten Premier League goals in 2022/23 helped Brighton qualify for European football for the first time.
Argentina’s 2022 World Cup triumph gave that versatility a global stage. Mac Allister started every match after the opening defeat by Saudi Arabia, scored against Poland and supplied Ángel Di María’s goal in the final against France. Argentina won the trophy on penalties after a 3–3 draw.
He joined Liverpool in June 2023 and started their League Cup final victory over Chelsea in 2024. The following season, he helped win the Premier League, scoring in the 5–1 victory over Tottenham that secured the 2024/25 title.
With Argentina, he added the 2024 Copa América. At the 2026 World Cup he scored in the quarter-final against Switzerland and played the whole final, which Argentina lost 1–0 to Spain after extra time.
UEFA’s analysis of Liverpool’s November 2024 win over Real Madrid offers a clear example of his style. He received between the lines and found Conor Bradley’s run behind the defence. For his own goal, he collected a pass deeper in midfield, moved forward to offer another option, then combined with Bradley to finish. His value in those sequences came from moving the ball and finding the next space to receive it.
Alexis Mac Allister currently plays for Liverpool as a central midfielder. He has represented Argentina internationally.
