Profile
Jeremie Frimpong is a Dutch right-sided player whose speed makes him a threat beyond an opposing defence. Used as a full-back, wing-back and winger, he can race onto passes behind defenders and turn them into shooting opportunities, as well as advance high up the flank to support attacks.
Born in Amsterdam on 10 December 2000, he moved to England with his family as a child and developed in Manchester City’s academy. He left without making a senior appearance for City, joining Celtic in September 2019.
Frimpong helped Celtic win a domestic treble in 2019/20 before joining Bayer Leverkusen in January 2021. The German club recruited him as a right-back, highlighting his technique and desire to attack. Under Xabi Alonso, he subsequently became an important attacking presence at right wing-back.
Leverkusen’s 2023/24 season made that contribution especially visible. Frimpong scored 14 goals across all competitions as the team won the Bundesliga without losing a league match and added the DFB-Pokal. They also reached the Europa League final, where defeat by Atalanta ended their unbeaten run.
He made his senior Netherlands debut in October 2023. At EURO 2024 he started on the wing against France and almost scored in the opening minute, accelerating onto a through ball before Mike Maignan saved. It was a clear example of how his running can threaten the space behind a defence from an advanced starting position.
He returned to English football by joining Liverpool in the summer of 2025. In August he scored against Crystal Palace in the Community Shield at Wembley, although Liverpool lost the penalty shootout after a 2-2 draw. The move followed four-and-a-half seasons at Leverkusen.
His width also matters before he touches the ball. A 2024 study published by the Italian federation described how Frimpong and Alejandro Grimaldo stretched Leverkusen’s shape while midfielders combined inside. Switching play could then leave a wide player facing one opponent near the penalty area. That structure helps explain how Frimpong’s pace becomes useful during patient possession as well as when space opens behind defenders.
Jeremie Frimpong currently plays for Liverpool as a right-back. He has represented the Netherlands internationally.
