Profile
Florian Wirtz is a German attacking midfielder whose movement helps turn possession into chances. He finds space between defenders and midfielders, then combines passes with teammates or carries the ball towards the back line. He connects those actions while moving across different parts of the attack.
Born on 3 May 2003, Wirtz developed at Grün-Weiß Brauweiler and Cologne before joining Bayer Leverkusen in January 2020. His Bundesliga debut followed that May, and his first senior goal, against Bayern Munich a few weeks later, made him the competition’s youngest scorer at the time.
His breakthrough became central to a historic team achievement in 2023/24. Under Xabi Alonso, Leverkusen won their first Bundesliga title without losing a league match and added the DFB Cup. Wirtz scored a hat-trick in the 5–0 victory over Werder Bremen that clinched the championship and received the Bundesliga’s Player of the Season award.
He made his senior Germany debut in September 2021. At EURO 2024, he scored the opening goal of the tournament, meeting Joshua Kimmich’s pass with a first-time finish in Germany’s 5–1 victory over Scotland. It was a national stage for the quick execution seen in his club football.
Wirtz joined Liverpool in June 2025 and scored his first Premier League goal against Wolverhampton Wanderers that December. Premier League analysis in January 2026 described how he moved across the attacking line, seeking space towards the corners of the penalty area to combine with a teammate against one defender.
At the 2026 World Cup, his cross supplied Kai Havertz’s equaliser against Paraguay in the round of 32. Germany nevertheless went out on penalties after the match finished 1–1, bringing that tournament campaign to an early end.
A Champions League example shows how his positioning can break a defensive screen. Against Inter in December 2024, a direct pass from Granit Xhaka was blocked off, so Leverkusen used Exequiel Palacios to reach Wirtz. He then drove towards the defence and released Jeremie Frimpong. The exchange demonstrates why being available for the next pass matters as much as the final delivery.
Florian Wirtz currently plays for Liverpool as an attacking midfielder. He has represented Germany internationally.
