Profile
Career & playing style
Alexander Isak is a Swedish centre-forward who can turn receiving the ball away from goal into a scoring opportunity. Comfortable collecting possession on the left, he can carry it towards the box, while his runs behind defenders and towards crosses give teammates a direct target.
Born in Solna on 21 September 1999, he progressed through AIK’s youth system and scored on his competitive first-team debut in February 2016. Later that year, he marked his seventeenth birthday with two goals in a 3–0 derby win over Djurgården.
He moved to Borussia Dortmund in January 2017, then spent time on loan at Willem II before joining Real Sociedad in summer 2019. In Spain he helped win the 2019/20 Copa del Rey, starting the postponed final against Athletic Club when it was played in April 2021.
Newcastle United brought him to England in summer 2022. His 23 Premier League goals in 2024/25 accompanied a defining cup moment: he scored in the 2–1 League Cup final victory over Liverpool in March 2025, which ended Newcastle’s 70-year wait for a domestic trophy.
Isak joined Liverpool on 1 September 2025 after three seasons at Newcastle. He left with 62 goals in 109 appearances across all competitions, a completed chapter in which his ability to combine with teammates accompanied his work as the principal finisher.
For Sweden, his January 2017 goal against Slovakia made him the men’s national team’s youngest scorer at the time. At the 2026 World Cup he scored in the opening 5–1 win over Tunisia; Sweden’s tournament ended against France in the round of 32.
The Tunisia match also showed how his different skills connect. Receiving on the left from Viktor Gyökeres, Isak drove towards a defender, cut inside and finished into the far corner. Later he won possession in Tunisia’s build-up and set up Gyökeres. He could start an attack, finish it or supply the final pass.
