Profile
Gabriel Magalhães is a Brazilian centre-back whose left foot and mobility help a possession team defend as well as build attacks. In Arsenal’s 2022/23 system, when Oleksandr Zinchenko moved from left-back into midfield, Gabriel covered the space down the left. He could also play forward passes into midfield himself.
Born in São Paulo, he left home to join Avaí at 13. His senior debut in January 2016 supplied an early sign of his scoring threat: a headed equaliser against Grêmio. In January 2017 he moved to Lille, beginning a European career that took time to settle.
Loans to Troyes and Dinamo Zagreb interrupted that first spell in France. After returning to Lille, he worked his way into Christophe Galtier’s team during 2018/19. The following season brought Champions League football, giving him experience against a different level of opposition before his move to England.
Arsenal signed him in September 2020. He scored on his debut in a 3–0 win at Fulham, meeting Willian’s corner for the second goal. It was a fitting introduction for a defender whose attacking contribution would become a recurring part of his game.
At corners, Gabriel’s threat depends on movement as well as height and strength. He varies his starting position to gather momentum, then accelerates towards the delivery. Teammates’ runs and blocks can separate him from his marker or restrict the goalkeeper’s route to the ball. His timing turns those organised routines into chances to make the first contact.
In 2025/26 he helped Arsenal win their first Premier League title since 2004. He and William Saliba also started the Champions League final that May against Paris Saint-Germain. After a 1–1 draw, Arsenal lost 4–3 on penalties, with Gabriel sending the final kick over the bar.
He made his senior Brazil debut in September 2023, starting a 5–1 World Cup qualifying win over Bolivia. At the 2026 World Cup he lined up alongside Marquinhos against Norway in the last 16. Brazil’s tournament ended there with a 2–1 defeat.
Gabriel Magalhães currently plays for Arsenal as a centre-back. He has represented Brazil internationally.
