Profile
Jurriën Timber is a Dutch defender whose work with the ball can change the shape of an attack. Comfortable at centre-back or full-back, he looks for forward passes and carries into the space ahead of him. At Ajax, that often meant taking possession out of the defensive line and into midfield, rather than leaving the next phase entirely to someone else.
His movement can also make room for teammates. In early 2024/25, Arsenal used him at left-back with freedom to move inside. Premier League analyst Adrian Clarke explained how that positioning allowed Declan Rice to support the winger from wider areas. Timber’s versatility therefore concerns where he goes during an attack as well as where he starts.
Born in Utrecht, Timber joined Ajax’s academy alongside his brother Quinten in 2014. He made his professional debut for the club’s under-23 side in autumn 2018, then earned a first-team start against Heerenveen on 7 March 2020. Ajax won 3–1, shortly before the pandemic interrupted the season. His subsequent development included a regular central-defensive partnership with Lisandro Martínez.
Timber won the Eredivisie with Ajax in 2020/21 and 2021/22, alongside the Dutch Cup in 2021. Ajax named him their Talent of the Year in 2022, and he also received the Eredivisie’s Player of the Year and Talent of the Year awards that August.
He joined Arsenal in July 2023. The move brought that ability to build attacks from defence into Mikel Arteta’s squad, and Timber was part of Arsenal’s 2025/26 Premier League title-winning team. On 30 May 2026 he came off the bench in the Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain, which Arsenal lost on penalties after a 1–1 draw.
His senior Netherlands debut came against Scotland on 2 June 2021, when he started in a defensive line with Matthijs de Ligt and Stefan de Vrij. A later international milestone was one he could not reach: on 8 June 2026, the Dutch federation announced his withdrawal before the World Cup because he had not recovered sufficiently from a groin injury.
Jurriën Timber currently plays for Arsenal as a right-back. He has represented the Netherlands internationally.
