Profile
Ethan Nwaneri is an English attacking midfielder whose game combines close control with a dangerous left-footed shot. Starting on the right gives him a route towards goal: he can carry the ball inside and bend a finish towards the far corner, rather than needing to reach the byline first.
He can also beat a defender on the outside, making that inward movement harder to anticipate. His midfield instincts add another option. Premier League analysis of his Arsenal breakthrough found him receiving in deeper, more central areas than Bukayo Saka, even when the two occupied the same nominal wing position.
Nwaneri joined Arsenal’s academy at eight and progressed through its youth teams. In September 2022, he came on against Brentford and became the youngest player to appear in the Premier League. That brief introduction preceded the more sustained opportunities through which his attacking qualities became visible in senior football.
A February 2025 performance against Leicester illustrated the range of that threat. He struck the woodwork twice and supplied the cross for Mikel Merino’s opening goal. It was an example of the same player creating danger through both his own shooting and a delivery for a team-mate.
Internationally, he helped England win the 2025 European Under-21 Championship. He came on in extra time of the final against Germany as England won 3–2 in Bratislava.
His development then took him abroad. He joined Marseille on loan from Arsenal in January 2026, having appeared in the first half of Arsenal’s 2025/26 Premier League title-winning campaign. A further loan move took him to Borussia Dortmund in 2026, extending a career that had begun in Arsenal’s academy.
Alongside those club experiences, Nwaneri trained with England’s senior squad at its World Cup preparation camp in June 2026. He described the faster tempo and demanding environment as valuable lessons. That experience added exposure to senior international standards to a pathway already marked by competitive success with the under-21s.
