Profile
Viktor Gyökeres is a Swedish striker whose direct running can change the speed of an attack. His runs give teammates an early passing option behind the defence and he can carry the ball forward himself. His one-touch combinations also let teammates join attacks, giving him a role beyond waiting for a finish in the box.
Born in Stockholm on 4 June 1998, he began playing at IFK Aspudden-Tellus before developing at Brommapojkarna. Coach Olof Mellberg described moving him from the wing into a central striking role. Gyökeres recalled the extra individual training that helped him adapt to that change.
His route to prominence included setbacks and loans. After joining Brighton in 2018, he gained experience at St. Pauli, Swansea City and Coventry City, making the Coventry move permanent in 2021. Two full seasons there provided a sustained breakthrough before his July 2023 transfer to Sporting CP.
In Portugal he won the league in 2023/24 and 2024/25, finishing as its top scorer both times. His second season brought 54 goals in 52 matches across all competitions. He also scored a late penalty to force extra time in the 2025 Portuguese Cup final, which Sporting won to complete the double.
He joined Arsenal in July 2025 and helped win the 2025/26 Premier League title, the club’s first in 22 years. That season also took him to the Champions League final, where he came on as a substitute in Arsenal’s penalty-shootout defeat by Paris Saint-Germain.
With Sweden, his hat-trick against Ukraine and late winner against Poland were decisive in the play-offs for the 2026 World Cup. The Poland goal came in the 88th minute, when he reacted to a rebound off the post and won the close-range contest to secure a 3–2 victory.
He then scored in Sweden’s 5–1 opening World Cup win over Tunisia, a match that illustrated his partnership with Alexander Isak. Gyökeres released Isak down the left for one goal before finishing a chance Isak created by winning possession. Sweden eventually went out to France in the round of 32.
Viktor Gyökeres currently plays for Arsenal as a striker. He has represented Sweden internationally.
