Isak and Gyökeres give Sweden winning start against Romania
Sweden opened their return to League B with a 2–1 home win over Romania, another side promoted from League C. Alexander Isak put Sweden ahead, Dennis Man brought Romania level and Viktor Gyökeres restored the lead before half-time. Those goals gave Sweden three points at the start of a group that also contains Poland and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
AI-assisted match report written from official match data and the sources linked below.
Sweden's federation described Romania as dangerous on first-half counters, but Sweden as more in control after the break. An apparent third goal from Elliot Stroud was ruled out after VAR found an earlier Isak handball, and Emil Holm went off injured around the hour mark. Potter said those setbacks made the second half more difficult than he had hoped, though he felt Sweden controlled the finish.
Gyökeres had led the entire 2024/25 Nations League scoring chart with nine goals, and his finish proved decisive in this first test at the higher level. Romania's equaliser showed they could answer Sweden's early breakthrough, but they could not find a second response. Sweden host Poland next on Monday; Romania face Bosnia and Herzegovina at home the same day.

Sirius · Why these numbers
Before kick-off Sirius gave Sweden 53%, the draw 23%, Romania 24%. It finished Sweden 2–1 Romania.
A slight rating edge to Sweden, little else — Sweden are a shade stronger on our strength rating, and Romania's hot finishing due to cool on top gives Sweden the lean. The draw at 23% is held down by a high-scoring environment.
Why Sweden at 53%?
Sweden sit 76 points higher on our strength rating — 1721 to 1645. Sides with a 40–80-point rating edge at home won 50.2% of 10,306 such games. Romania scored +0.43 goals per game beyond chance-quality lately — hot streaks like that have cooled off. Visitors running this hot went on to win 26.8% of 1,432 games, vs 27.8% for visitors finishing normally.
Why only 53%?
Romania hold 5 more possession points (51 to 46 in recent games) across a 76-point rating gap. Control now carries a receipt beyond near-equals too: sides with this control edge at a 60–120-point rating gap won 42.6% of 8,527 such games where the class table expected 40.8%.
Why is the draw only 23%?
With a rating gap this size the draw starts at 26.6%. These teams' recent games average 3.5 goals — a high-scoring environment. Games in that environment drew 22.9% of 17,250. The goals environment takes 2.3 points off the draw. The cool-off factor takes 2.1 points off the draw.
What did we measure but not count?
Romania have shed 66 strength-rating points over their last 10 games. Momentum is measured but not yet proven: sliding sides won 34.1% of 9,517 such games vs 33.6% class-expected — inside the noise band, so it stays at 0 points until the receipt clears its evidence bar. Sweden (12 fully-tracked matches with us) and Romania (13) carry strength ratings anchored to the official international ratings list, so the class read stands on far more than our own short records. National sides play too few games for a record built from scratch, so their rating chain starts from the published international ratings instead of a blind first guess.
