Profile
James Garner is an English midfielder whose game links defensive anticipation with purposeful passing. He can close the route into an opponent’s midfield, recover possession and then look beyond the nearest safe pass. His versatility has also taken him to both full-back positions, while central midfield brings those responsibilities together.
Born in Birkenhead, Garner began with Stork FC, playing alongside children older than himself. Manchester United and Everton both noticed him at local tournaments, and he chose United. In his own account of those years, he recalled travelling from the Wirral to Manchester after school as he progressed through United’s youth system.
Loans at Watford and Nottingham Forest gave him sustained experience of senior football in the Championship. He helped Forest win promotion in 2022, adding creativity from midfield and set pieces. In September that year, he moved from Manchester United to Everton, taking the next step into Premier League football.
His early Everton development included a difficult interruption: a back injury kept him out during the 2022/23 campaign. He returned to the side during its successful effort to avoid relegation. Garner later credited his Championship experience with helping him handle the physical demands of a crowded Premier League schedule.
The detail of his defensive work was visible against Aston Villa in January 2026. Garner explained how Everton blocked central passing routes, pushed the attack wide and waited for a chance to regain the ball. He also helps create chances with passes through opposition lines, complementing his work to regain possession.
International football supplied a major early honour. Garner started the final as England beat Spain 1–0 to win the 2023 European Under-21 Championship. The title followed his return to regular football at Everton, and he later described the tournament as a particularly happy period after his interrupted club season.
On 27 March 2026, Garner made his senior England debut, starting the 1–1 draw with Uruguay at Wembley. It brought him into the senior side after his progress through England’s youth teams, with Thomas Tuchel giving him an opportunity from the opening whistle. In May 2026 he was left out of Tuchel’s 26-man England squad for the World Cup.
