Cristian Romero

Cristian Romero is an Argentine centre-back whose defending starts with closing the gap to an opponent. He anticipates the next pass, moves forward to challenge for the ball and tries to prevent a forward from turning towards goal.

Born in Córdoba on 27 April 1998, he made his senior debut for Belgrano in 2016. He moved to Genoa in 2018 and signed for Juventus the following year, remaining at Genoa on loan for the 2019/20 season before another loan took him to Atalanta.

His 2020/21 season in Bergamo brought a clear breakthrough. Atalanta finished third in Serie A and reached the Coppa Italia final, while Romero received the league’s Best Defender award. The award assessment highlighted how quickly he closed opponents down and anticipated their play.

He joined Tottenham Hotspur in August 2021. In May 2025 he captained the side in the Europa League final against Manchester United in Bilbao, where a 1–0 victory secured the trophy. UEFA named him the final’s Player of the Match.

That final illustrated two parts of his defensive game. UEFA’s technical observers highlighted his success in meeting United’s direct passes and winning the first challenge. As Tottenham dropped closer to their own goal, he kept winning individual duels. The same appetite for confronting an attacker could therefore serve both an assertive defensive line and a team protecting its penalty area.

Romero made his senior Argentina debut against Chile in June 2021 and started the Copa América final win over Brazil the following month. He went on to win the 2022 World Cup and a second Copa América in 2024, adding international milestones to his club development.

He reached another World Cup final in July 2026, when Argentina lost 1–0 to Spain. In August 2026 he joined Atlético Madrid from Tottenham, following five seasons in English football.
