Profile
Lucas Bergvall is a Swedish midfielder whose work without the ball can create attacking chances. Against Brighton in April 2026, he and João Palhinha closed down Jan Paul van Hecke and helped force a turnover deep in Brighton’s half. Tottenham suddenly had four attackers against one defender, giving Xavi Simons room to score. It was a clear example of pressure becoming an attacking weapon.
His route to that level ran through Stockholm football. Bergvall played in Sweden’s second tier for IF Brommapojkarna during their promotion campaign in 2022, then moved to Djurgården, where his brother Theo also played. During 2023 he established himself in the Allsvenskan, Sweden’s top division, before taking the next step abroad.
Tottenham announced an agreement to sign him in February 2024, with his arrival following in July. His competitive debut came against Leicester City that August. In January 2025, he scored his first Tottenham goal to secure a 1–0 win over Liverpool in the first leg of their League Cup semi-final.
The Europa League provided another important part of his first English season. He appeared in the first twelve matches of Tottenham’s successful 2024/25 campaign, although an ankle injury prevented him from playing in the semi-finals or final. His individual recognition came from supporters: he won the club’s Official Supporters’ Clubs, One Hotspur Members and One Hotspur Juniors Player of the Season awards.
His attacking contribution also took different forms. In September 2025, he scored his first Premier League goal against West Ham by looping a header over the goalkeeper from Cristian Romero’s pass, then assisted Micky van de Ven in a 3–0 win. Days later, on his Champions League debut against Villarreal, a dipping cross forced the own goal that decided the match. The header and cross offered contrasting examples of his contribution: finishing one move himself, then supplying the ball that decided another.
Bergvall made his senior Sweden debut against Estonia in January 2024 after playing at youth international levels. At the 2026 World Cup, he came on in all three group games before making his first tournament start against France. Sweden lost that last-32 match 3–0, ending his World Cup campaign.
