Profile
Josh Acheampong has played at centre-back, right-back and wing-back, with the space around him changing each job. He says an inverted full-back finds more bodies in the middle and has less room for touches. Out wide, he can face an opponent one-on-one or look for a cross. That contrast helps explain why moving him across the back line can change how Chelsea build an attack.
He entered Chelsea's development centre at Under-8 level. In 2023/24 he combined Under-18 and Under-21 football and helped the Under-18s win their Premier League southern section. On 2 May 2024, he came on late against Tottenham for his first men's-team appearance, three days before his eighteenth birthday.
His first senior start came at right-back against Astana in the Conference League in December 2024. In January 2025 he started a Premier League match for the first time, at centre-back alongside Levi Colwill in a draw at Crystal Palace. Chelsea supporters chose him as their player of the match. Acheampong said having the ball helped him settle into the physical challenge.
He played through Chelsea's Conference League quarter-final and semi-final ties. Chelsea beat Real Betis to win the competition in May 2025, with Acheampong an unused substitute in the final after contributing during the run. A month later he started Chelsea's Club World Cup group win over ES Tunis.
His 2025/26 opportunities again crossed positions and competitions. In October 2025, he headed in Pedro Neto's cross at Nottingham Forest for his first Chelsea goal. In the FA Cup at Wrexham in March 2026, he started at wing-back, could move inside, and struck a late equaliser before Chelsea won in extra time. The two goals came from different routes: an arrival for a cross and a run into the box.
Acheampong started an England Under-21 qualifier in Kazakhstan in September 2025. A year later, he started against the same opponents, scored with a low shot and headed the ball down for another England goal. He also started the draw with Slovakia on 2 October 2026 that secured England's place at the 2027 Under-21 European Championship.
Josh Acheampong currently plays for Chelsea as a centre-back.
