Profile
Andrey Santos can win the ball and make the next pass count. He looks to move possession forward from central midfield, using the ball well after a tackle or a duel. He is also comfortable receiving a short pass from a centre-back under pressure, helping the team start an attack through the middle.
Santos has described himself as happy playing either as a deeper midfielder or a number eight. He combines defensive one-against-one work with passes through the opposition's lines. He can help protect the defence, connect with another midfielder and then find a player ahead of him, depending on the job he has been given.
He grew up in Rio de Janeiro and spent most of his football education at Vasco da Gama. After developing through the academy, he became an important part of their 2022 promotion campaign from Brazil's second division. Chelsea signed him in January 2023, taking him from his boyhood club into a new country and league.
There was an early international milestone that February. Santos captained Brazil to the South American Under-20 Championship title, scoring the opening goal in the decisive win over Uruguay. His six goals across the tournament left him joint top scorer with teammate Vitor Roque, a notable return for a central midfielder.
His early Chelsea career included loans at Nottingham Forest and Strasbourg. France gave him regular football, and he captained Strasbourg during his time on loan as the team earned qualification for the Conference League. The spell also brought goals from midfield and experience of taking responsibility in a senior side.
Santos returned to Chelsea in the summer of 2025 and was part of their Club World Cup-winning squad. He also became a full Brazil international during his time with the club, though Carlo Ancelotti did not select him for Brazil's 2026 World Cup squad in May 2026. In July 2026 he completed a permanent move to Manchester United.
