Profile
Bernardo Silva is a Portuguese midfielder who can connect play from the centre or the right flank. His game pairs secure possession with constant movement: he offers a passing option deeper in midfield, runs beyond defenders and presses opponents to help his team recover the ball.
Born in Lisbon on 10 August 1994, he developed in Benfica’s academy and reserve side before joining Monaco in August 2014. France provided his breakthrough: he helped Monaco win Ligue 1 in 2016/17 and reach the Champions League semi-finals, establishing himself beyond the limited first-team opportunities he had received at Benfica.
He joined Manchester City in July 2017 and became part of Pep Guardiola’s 2022/23 treble-winning side, which lifted the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League. His contribution ranged from central midfield to the right flank, with occasional spells at left-back.
A defining performance came against Real Madrid in May 2023, when he scored twice in City’s 4-0 Champions League semi-final second-leg win. For the opener, he found space behind the defence to receive Kevin De Bruyne’s pass; for the second, he headed in after a blocked shot. Those contrasting finishes showed how his movement could turn sustained team possession into chances inside the box.
With Portugal, Bernardo was named Player of the Tournament at the inaugural Nations League finals in 2019, which his country won. He also started the 2025 final against Spain, helping Portugal secure a second title after a 2-2 draw and a 5-3 penalty shootout victory.
His nine-season Manchester City chapter ended in 2026. On 17 June that year, Real Madrid announced an agreement to sign him, adding a new Spanish chapter to a career developed across Portugal, France and England.
At the 2026 World Cup, he appeared in Portugal’s round-of-16 meeting with Spain as a second-half substitute. A late Spanish goal brought a 1-0 defeat and ended Portugal’s tournament.
Bernardo Silva currently plays for Real Madrid as a central midfielder. He has represented Portugal internationally.
