Profile
Phil Foden is an English attacking midfielder whose threat comes from how quickly he can act in a crowded space. A glance before receiving, a controlled first touch and a turn can bring him into shooting range before a defender closes him down.
Born in Stockport on 28 May 2000, he grew up supporting Manchester City and progressed through the club’s academy. His competitive first-team debut came against Feyenoord in the Champions League on 21 November 2017, under Pep Guardiola.
A few weeks earlier, Foden had helped England win the 2017 Under-17 World Cup in India. He scored twice in the 5–2 final victory over Spain and received the Golden Ball as the tournament’s best player.
He replaced Kevin De Bruyne in the 2023 Champions League final as City’s 1–0 win over Inter completed a league, FA Cup and European Cup treble. In 2023/24, his 19 Premier League goals helped secure a fourth successive title; he also won the competition’s Player of the Season award.
After his senior England debut in September 2020, he helped the side reach the Euro 2024 final. UEFA’s analysis of the semi-final win over the Netherlands recorded 15 receptions between the lines and 13 runs behind the defence, showing how he offered a passing option in front of defenders and a threat beyond them.
In May 2026, Foden became the sixth Manchester City player to reach a combined 100 Premier League goals and assists for the club. In 2025/26 he also won the League Cup and the FA Cup with City. He was not selected for England’s squad at the 2026 World Cup.
His preparation is especially useful between midfield and defence. Analysing his two goals against Borussia Dortmund in November 2025, UEFA highlighted his sideways body position and awareness of the space around him. By checking over his shoulder and receiving on the foot farther from the passer, he could turn towards goal ready to shoot. His next action was being prepared before the ball reached him.
Phil Foden currently plays for Manchester City as an attacking midfielder. He has represented England internationally.
