Career & playing style
Diego Gómez changes shape within an attack. He has played centrally and on either flank; from a wide position he can move inside to join midfield or arrive in the box. Brighton coach Fabian Hürzeler has also singled out his tracking back. That combination adds a runner to attacks while retaining a midfielder's work when possession changes.
His game has a defensive edge as well as forward movement. Brighton's analysis of his Inter Miami season found that he attempted tackles across all three thirds while creating chances near goal. Covering that ground offers a tactical link between his jobs: contesting a ball high up can leave him closer to a dangerous area.
Gómez developed at Libertad in Paraguay and made his professional debut in a Copa Libertadores match in May 2022. He joined Inter Miami in 2023 and scored on his Major League Soccer debut against New York Red Bulls. He played in Miami's 2023 Leagues Cup win, including the final, then contributed to their 2024 Supporters' Shield campaign. He also earned a place in the league-wide 22 Under 22 ranking for 2024.
Paraguay gave him a senior debut in September 2022. He later captained the under-23 side to the 2024 CONMEBOL Pre-Olympic Tournament title and led the team at the Paris Olympics, where Paraguay reached the quarter-finals. In a World Cup qualifier against Brazil, he played from the left and scored the winner. That match demanded both deep defending and a threat near the opposition box.
He moved to Brighton in January 2025. On his full debut, against Bournemouth the next month, he played in a deeper midfield pair and helped move the ball into the final third. By 2025/26, Hürzeler had also used him closer to the wing and penalty area.
In September 2025 he scored four times in Brighton's League Cup win at Barnsley. Five goals across that competition made him its 2025/26 top scorer, although Brighton went out in the fourth round. In 2026 he played four matches for Paraguay at the World Cup, including the round-of-16 defeat to France. That added a senior international milestone to a career spanning Paraguayan club football, MLS and the Premier League.
