Profile
Adam Wharton is an English central midfielder whose passing helps move attacks through crowded areas. Predominantly left-footed, he combines a controlled first touch with an appetite for playing forward. His value often lies in finding an attacker early enough for the next pass or movement to become dangerous.
That influence does not always produce an assist. In Palace’s 4–1 league win over Aston Villa in February 2025, Premier League analysis identified his involvement in the first three goals without crediting him with an assist. His frequent passes towards Eberechi Eze, Jean-Philippe Mateta and Ismaïla Sarr showed how a deeper midfielder could connect the team to its forwards.
Wharton developed in Blackburn Rovers’ academy and made his senior debut in August 2022. He had supported the club before representing it. The education included studying his own matches: he later explained that Blackburn scholars had to prepare clips for their manager, a routine he felt helped him understand and improve his game.
He moved from Blackburn to Crystal Palace in 2024, stepping from Championship football into the Premier League. His first senior England appearance followed against Bosnia and Herzegovina on 3 June that year. Gareth Southgate then selected him for the final Euro 2024 squad, marking a rapid progression from academy graduate to senior international.
The following year brought a defining club achievement. Wharton started alongside Daichi Kamada in midfield when Palace beat Manchester City 1–0 in the FA Cup final on 17 May 2025. Eze scored the winning goal as Palace secured the first major trophy in the club’s history.
His forward passing contributed directly to another Wembley success that August. After Will Hughes recovered possession against Liverpool, Wharton released Sarr to score the equaliser in the Community Shield. The match finished 2–2 before Palace won the penalty shootout, turning a midfield recovery into a route back into the contest.
On 27 May 2026, Wharton helped Palace beat Rayo Vallecano 1–0 in the Conference League final. Mateta scored after the goalkeeper parried Wharton’s shot. UEFA named Wharton the final’s Player of the Match, recognising his chance creation and positioning: an individual award alongside the team’s European trophy. The previous week, Thomas Tuchel had left him out of England’s 26-man squad for the 2026 World Cup.
