Profile
Caoimhín Kelleher is a Republic of Ireland goalkeeper whose game combines quick reactions with careful positioning. Brentford goalkeeping coach Manu Sotelo singled out his agility and awareness when he signed in 2025. His ability to stop a close-range effort gives him a way of rescuing situations after opponents have broken through.
Born in Cork, Kelleher played up front for Ringmahon Rangers before switching to goal at 14. He had already begun goalkeeper training when the team lost its keeper, bringing the change forward. Liverpool recruited him in summer 2015, and he progressed through their academy before making his competitive first-team debut against Milton Keynes Dons in September 2019.
The next step came in December 2020, when he kept clean sheets on both his Champions League debut against Ajax and his Premier League debut against Wolverhampton Wanderers. Working alongside Alisson Becker also gave him a model for the mental side of the position: Kelleher has highlighted the Brazilian’s calmness and clarity when making split-second decisions.
His place in Liverpool’s cup history was secured at Wembley in February 2022. After keeping Chelsea out for 120 minutes, he scored in the shootout before Kepa Arrizabalaga missed, settling the League Cup final. In the 2024 final against the same opponents, another clean sheet helped Liverpool win through Virgil van Dijk’s extra-time winner.
Kelleher also contributed to Liverpool’s 2024/25 Premier League title, including a run of seven consecutive league starts between October and December 2024. His move to Brentford was announced in June 2025, opening a new chapter after his development and cup breakthroughs on Merseyside.
His distribution adds another dimension. Brentford’s analysis of the October 2025 Manchester City match highlighted his accurate long passing as well as a reaction save from Tijjani Reijnders. Those longer deliveries offer a route beyond the first line of pressure, while his shot-stopping can keep his team in a contest when possession is harder to secure.
Kelleher made his senior international debut against Hungary in June 2021. He started Ireland’s March 2026 World Cup qualifying play-off against Czechia, which finished 2-2 before the Czech side won on penalties. Ireland’s campaign ended short of the finals.
Caoimhín Kelleher currently plays for Brentford as a goalkeeper. He has represented Rep. Of Ireland internationally.
