Career & playing style
Kevin Schade threatens the space behind a defence. From the left, he can turn a pass into a footrace, then arrive in the penalty area rather than staying outside to cross. His speed makes defenders retreat; his timing and leap give him another route to goal. These qualities suit both a winger and a more central attacker.
His route to senior football ran through SV Babelsberg and Energie Cottbus before he joined Freiburg's academy in 2018. He progressed through Freiburg's under-19 side and reserves, then made his Bundesliga debut against Borussia Dortmund in August 2021. His first league goal, a header against Borussia Mönchengladbach that December, showed he could finish a move as well as accelerate one.
Brentford brought Schade from Freiburg on loan in January 2023 and completed a permanent move that June. Initially used from the bench, he started more often later in that first season. He made his senior Germany debut as a substitute against Peru in March. His first Premier League goal came against Crystal Palace that August, with a curling finish.
The November 2024 win over Leicester offered a fuller picture of his range. Schade supplied a low ball for Yoane Wissa's equaliser, then scored three times: a finish inside the box, a lifted shot after Mikkel Damsgaard found his run, and another finish from Nathan Collins' pass. He linked the attack and made different kinds of runs.
Schade has described working on where to stand between a full-back and centre-back, or between the two centre-backs, so that a direct pass or cross finds him close to goal. His partnership with Damsgaard illustrated the idea: one player looked for the pass into depth while Schade anticipated it. The aerial side matters too. His late header completed another hat-trick, against Bournemouth in December 2025, after goals with each foot.
A September 2026 draw at Bournemouth again showed both routes to goal: Schade headed in a cross from Yehor Yarmoliuk, then punished a misplaced pass with a composed chip. Later that month he started on Germany's wing against the Netherlands and Greece in the Nations League. Schade's career is built on more than a straight sprint: his runs create the opening, but his positioning and finishing decide what comes next.
