Career & playing style
Donyell Malen is a Dutch forward whose pace is useful both with the ball and before he receives it. He can run beyond a defence or come towards a teammate to exchange passes. Although he has played through the middle and from the right, the common aim is to turn movement into a route towards goal.
His development took him through the Ajax and Arsenal academies before a move to PSV Eindhoven in 2017. At PSV he progressed from the reserve side, Jong PSV, into the first team. After Luuk de Jong departed, Malen took the number nine shirt.
Borussia Dortmund signed him in 2021. His experience as a centre-forward at PSV translated into a different starting position in Germany, where he often attacked from the right.
At EURO 2024, Malen provided a decisive contribution from the bench against Romania. Introduced at half-time on 2 July, he scored twice in a 3–0 round-of-16 win. His first was a close-range finish from Cody Gakpo’s pass; his second, in stoppage time, completed the victory and sent the Netherlands into the quarter-finals.
He joined Aston Villa in January 2025 and moved to Roma on loan in January 2026. Roma announced that the deal had become permanent on 26 May 2026. These moves took him from German to English and then Italian league football, extending a senior career that had begun in the Netherlands.
Malen also played at the 2026 World Cup, starting the Netherlands’ 5–1 group-stage victory over Sweden on 20 June before being replaced at half-time. The Dutch campaign ended against Morocco in the round of 32, with a penalty shoot-out defeat after a 1–1 draw.
In Italy, he earned individual recognition: Serie A named him its Player of the Month for August–September 2026. That award recognised performances across the opening five league rounds, adding a dated personal milestone to his move to Roma.
