Profile
Boubacar Kamara is a French international midfielder whose game connects the base of midfield with the defensive line. He can help a team keep the ball under pressure, then move back into defence when the shape demands it.
Born in Marseille, Kamara joined his hometown club's academy aged five in 2005. His development also took him through France's youth teams, including appearances at the 2019 Under-20 World Cup and the 2021 European Under-21 Championship. By 2021/22 he was an important part of the Marseille side that finished second in Ligue 1 and reached the Europa Conference League semi-finals.
Aston Villa announced his signing in May 2022, ahead of his summer move from Marseille. Kamara said that Steven Gerrard's visit to his home helped persuade him to make the switch. The same period brought his senior international breakthrough: on 6 June 2022 he came off the bench for France in a 1–1 Nations League draw with Croatia.
Under Unai Emery, Kamara's partnership with Douglas Luiz helped Villa play through pressure. Premier League analysis of their 2023 approach highlighted both midfielders' control of the ball within rehearsed passing moves. Keeping possession at the base allowed Villa to wait for opponents to step forward, then accelerate through the space beyond them. Kamara's contribution was part of the preparation for those attacks.
His defensive flexibility supplied a different solution against Manchester City in October 2025. Emery moved him into the back line as Villa defended in a 5-4-1, crowding the area around Erling Haaland. Kamara helped protect central space by changing position, rather than simply chasing the ball from midfield.
In January 2026 he injured his left knee in an FA Cup tie at Tottenham and needed surgery, which ruled him out for the rest of the season and left him out of contention when France named their World Cup squad in May. Villa won the Europa League in May 2026, but Kamara did not play in the final against Freiburg. He did start the UEFA Super Cup against Paris Saint-Germain on 12 August, when Villa lost 2–1.
Boubacar Kamara currently plays for Aston Villa as a midfielder. He has represented France internationally.
