Profile
Emiliano Martínez is an Argentine goalkeeper whose game combines decisive close-range saves with an active role in starting attacks. His performances show the importance of timing: when to leave his line to confront an attacker, and when to release the ball to a teammate.
Born on 2 September 1992, he developed in Independiente’s youth system before joining Arsenal in August 2010. Several loan spells preceded his breakthrough in the 2019/20 season, when he started Arsenal’s final eleven matches and helped them win the FA Cup. He moved to Aston Villa in September 2020.
His ability with the ball became part of Villa’s route to winning the Europa League in 2026. In the 3–0 final victory over Freiburg, UEFA’s analysis highlighted how he alternated patient possession and short passes with longer deliveries towards the forwards. Sending opponents back towards their own goal could then create more room for Villa to pass through midfield.
International recognition arrived after his senior Argentina debut in June 2021. He helped win the Copa América that year and again in 2024, receiving the tournament’s best goalkeeper award on both occasions. Those successes bookended Argentina’s 2022 World Cup triumph, in which he played all seven matches and contributed to shootout victories over the Netherlands and France.
The World Cup final also produced a defining save from Randal Kolo Muani late in extra time. FIFA’s goalkeeping analysis emphasised his quick advance followed by the patience to stay upright before making the block. Against Australia earlier in the tournament, rapid first steps and a spread blocking stance had denied Garang Kuol. Both interventions show how he reduces an attacker’s space before the shot.
He returned to the World Cup final in 2026, when Argentina lost 1–0 to Spain after extra time. In August that year he joined Chelsea from Villa.
Emiliano Martínez currently plays for Chelsea as a goalkeeper. He has represented Argentina internationally.
