Profile
Chris Rigg is a left-footed midfielder whose close control helps him move through crowded spaces. He has played centrally and farther forward, including as a No 10. Across those roles, he looks to receive, turn and carry towards defenders when a safer pass is available.
His Sunderland first-team story began early. In August 2023 he scored against Crewe Alexandra in the League Cup, becoming the club’s youngest goalscorer. The next month he headed in against Southampton in the Championship and became Sunderland’s youngest league scorer.
Rigg moved from isolated moments to a regular part in Sunderland’s 2024/25 Championship promotion campaign. He featured across the season as the team won the play-offs and returned to the Premier League. His different midfield and attacking assignments also began to explain why one position label cannot capture his entire game.
That attacking instinct was clear in a September 2024 derby against Middlesbrough. As Patrick Roberts attacked from the right, Rigg entered the box and backheeled the winner from a tightening angle. The finish earned the Championship’s September Goal of the Month award. It showed quick movement and improvisation.
Premier League football brought another role. Early in 2025/26 he played as Sunderland’s No 10, ahead of a deeper midfield pair. In March 2026 he started against Newcastle and forced a save before Sunderland’s equaliser. He could operate near the forwards while still carrying the habits of a midfielder.
Rigg has advanced through England’s youth teams. He captained the Under-17s and scored against Spain in September 2023, then scored the winner against Portugal in March 2025 to help the Under-19s qualify for the European finals. He was named in the original finals squad but was later replaced.
In the next Under-19 qualifying cycle, Rigg started and scored against Scotland in November 2025. England missed the 2026 finals despite beating Portugal in their last elite-round match. He then started an Under-20 win over France in September 2026.
Chris Rigg currently plays for Sunderland as an attacking midfielder.
