Overview

Sunderland in brief

Founded in 1879 as Sunderland and District Teachers, Sunderland are one of the historic clubs of north-east English football. Based in Sunderland and known as the Black Cats, the club moved from Roker Park to the Stadium of Light in 1997. Their identity is rooted in Wearside support and red-and-white stripes.

Sunderland's honours include six English top-flight league titles, two FA Cups and an EFL Trophy. The club's early success was built around the Team of All Talents in the 1890s, while Bob Stokoe's 1973 FA Cup-winning side remains one of the most famous cup stories in English football.
