Profile
Alejandro Balde is a left-back who uses acceleration to take the ball past opponents. Controlled touches with his instep help him carry possession through pressure, while his pace sustains longer runs up the flank. That combination gives a team a way to move quickly from its own half into attacking territory.
During his 2022/23 breakthrough under Xavi Hernández, those qualities had a clear tactical purpose. Balde could stretch play high and wide like a winger, then defend the same side as a full-back. That helped Barcelona fit four midfielders into central positions without giving up an attacking presence on the left.
Born in Barcelona, Balde moved from Espanyol’s youth system to Barça in 2011. He progressed through the academy and played above his age group before reaching Barça B. His official first-team debut came against Bayern Munich on 14 September 2021, when he replaced Jordi Alba in the Champions League.
His international breakthrough followed during the 2022 World Cup. Called into Spain’s squad after José Luis Gayà’s injury, he made his senior debut against Costa Rica on 23 November, again coming on for Alba. He made four appearances at the tournament in Qatar.
The 4–2 win at Espanyol on 14 May 2023 offered a memorable demonstration of his attacking range. Balde created Robert Lewandowski’s opening goal with a run down the left, then arrived to finish Pedri’s cross for his first league goal as Barcelona secured the title.
A later example came in the Spanish Super Cup final on 12 January 2025. Balde finished a counter-attack from Raphinha’s pass in Barcelona’s 5–2 victory over Real Madrid, contributing a goal to another trophy-winning night.
He also shared in Barcelona’s La Liga and Copa del Rey successes in 2024/25. In 2025/26, he added another league title and Spanish Super Cup, starting the latter’s final against Real Madrid on 11 January 2026.
Alejandro Balde currently plays for Barcelona as a left-back. He has represented Spain internationally.
