Profile
Marc Bernal is a Spanish holding midfielder developed at La Masia. His role starts in the deeper part of midfield, but his early Barcelona goals show another side of his game: carrying the ball towards goal and arriving from behind the forwards to finish attacks.
Born in Berga on 26 May 2007, Bernal joined Barcelona's academy when he was six. His route through the youth teams accelerated when he moved directly from under-16 football to Barça Atlètic, bypassing the under-18 side. Playing under Rafa Márquez in 2023/24 gave him an early grounding in senior football before his first-team opportunity arrived.
Hansi Flick handed him his competitive Barcelona debut away to Valencia on 17 August 2024. He started that match, but his breakthrough was interrupted ten days later by a serious knee injury against Rayo Vallecano. The interruption stretched beyond a year, separating his first few senior games from the next stage of his development.
His return came against Valencia on 14 September 2025. Coming off the bench, he supplied Robert Lewandowski for the final goal in a 6–0 win. His first Barcelona first-team goal followed against Mallorca on 7 February 2026: after being released towards goal, he moved away from two defenders and adjusted his body to finish with his left foot.
A different route to goal appeared in the Copa del Rey semi-final against Atlético Madrid on 3 March 2026. Bernal scored twice, meeting Lamine Yamal's delivery for the opener and later advancing from midfield to score again. Barcelona won the second leg 3–0 but were eliminated on aggregate. He was also part of the club's 2025/26 La Liga-winning squad.
Bernal's senior Spain debut came on 4 June 2026, when he started the 1–1 friendly draw with Iraq in A Coruña. He had joined the camp as one of nine support players helping preparations for the World Cup, a group separate from the 26 selected for the tournament.
Marc Bernal currently plays for Barcelona as a defensive midfielder. He has represented Spain internationally.
