Profile
Ademola Lookman is a Nigerian forward whose game combines direct dribbling with changes of direction near goal. Comfortable attacking from a wing or alongside a striker, he can threaten both sides of a defender. His finishing with either foot makes it harder to predict which way he will turn.
His route into professional football began with Waterloo FC in south London before he joined Charlton Athletic in 2014. He made his senior debut in November 2015 and moved to Everton in January 2017, scoring on his Premier League debut against Manchester City. That progression took him from local football to the top flight in only a few years.
The next stage involved several changes of setting. A loan at RB Leipzig in 2018 preceded a permanent move there in 2019, followed by loans at Fulham and Leicester City. Atalanta signed him in August 2022. The Italian spell eventually provided a defining club performance of his career: the 2024 Europa League final.
On 22 May 2024, Lookman scored all three goals in Atalanta’s 3–0 win over Bayer Leverkusen in Dublin, securing the club’s first European trophy. The goals showed different ways of escaping a defender: arriving behind a marker to finish first time, feinting before shooting with his right foot, then using a stepover to create room for a left-footed strike. UEFA’s technical observers highlighted that variety.
His international development crossed two national teams. He helped England win the Under-20 World Cup in 2017, then made his senior Nigeria debut in March 2022. He also helped Nigeria reach the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations final. CAF named him its Men’s Player of the Year for 2024.
Another Nigeria milestone followed in January 2026 at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. Lookman came on against Egypt in the third-place match and converted the decisive penalty in Nigeria’s shootout victory. The result brought bronze.
Lookman joined Atlético de Madrid in February 2026. He scored in the Copa del Rey final against Real Sociedad that April, but Atlético lost the shootout after a 2–2 draw. It added another major final to his career without adding another team title.
Ademola Lookman currently plays for Atletico Madrid as a forward. He has represented Nigeria internationally.
