Career & playing style
Oihan Sancet is a Spanish attacking midfielder whose threat comes from combining the pass with the run that follows it. He can help build an attack and then become its finishing option, using his pace and sense of space to enter the penalty area as the ball arrives from a teammate.
Born in Pamplona, Sancet developed in Osasuna's youth system before joining Athletic Club's Lezama academy in 2015. His route continued through the youth teams and Bilbao Athletic, the reserve side. On 16 August 2019, he made his first-team debut against Barcelona in the opening match of the league season.
His first Athletic hat-trick, against Osasuna in January 2022, offers a useful picture of his scoring range. He headed in Iñaki Williams's cross, met an Óscar de Marcos delivery with a low volley and finished another low cross from Álex Berenguer. All three goals in the 3–1 win came from getting on the end of service from wide areas.
That threat also extends beyond the box. In July 2023, his deflected shot from outside the area put Spain ahead in their 5–1 Under-21 European Championship semi-final win over Ukraine. He then started the final against England, which Spain lost 1–0.
The step into senior international football followed on 12 October 2023. Sancet came off the bench against Scotland and scored Spain's second goal in a 2–0 qualifying win. The federation's account highlighted both his involvement in creating play and his arrival in the area, the same two jobs that define his attacking role.
A defining club moment arrived in the Copa del Rey final on 6 April 2024. Sancet finished a move supplied by Nico Williams to equalise against Mallorca after half-time. Athletic eventually won on penalties following a 1–1 draw.
His scoring earned individual recognition in February 2025, when he was named LaLiga's Player of the Month after six goals across four league games, including a hat-trick against Girona. He finished the 2024/25 season with 17 goals for Athletic across all competitions.
