Profile
Aurélien Tchouaméni is a French midfielder who combines defensive positioning with an ability to keep possession moving. He watches for danger in front of the defence, competes for loose balls and uses a varied passing range to connect the players around him.
Born in Rouen on 27 January 2000, he played for SJ d’Artigues before entering Bordeaux’s academy in 2011. He helped Bordeaux win the French under-19 championship in 2016/17 and made his first-team debut in July 2018, progressing through the French youth national teams along the way.
His move to Monaco in January 2020 brought a larger stage for his development. Alongside Youssouf Fofana in midfield, he established himself during the 2020/21 season and won the UNFP award for Ligue 1’s best young player.
Tchouaméni joined Real Madrid in 2022. His early honours there included the Copa del Rey in 2023, followed by LaLiga and the Champions League in 2024, adding major club trophies to the recognition he had earned in France.
He made his senior France debut in September 2021 and started the Nations League final victory over Spain the following month. At the 2022 World Cup he played in all seven French matches, including the final, as France finished runners-up to Argentina.
At the 2026 World Cup, he made four appearances and started the semi-final defeat by Spain. France finished fourth after losing the third-place match to England; Tchouaméni was an unused substitute in that final fixture.
UEFA’s analysis of his February 2026 performance against Benfica shows how the different parts of his game fit together. He repeatedly checked his surroundings before receiving passes, covered the defence and dropped into the penalty area to deal with crosses. For his goal, he intercepted a pass, waited before moving forward and arrived to meet a cutback. The timing let him contribute to the attack from a deeper starting position.
Aurélien Tchouaméni currently plays for Real Madrid as a defensive midfielder. He has represented France internationally.
