Profile
Rodrygo is a Brazilian forward who links wing play with finishing inside the penalty area. He can beat a defender on the outside, release the ball and then become the target for a teammate’s return pass.
Born in Osasco on 9 January 2001, he developed in Santos’s academy before making his first-team debut in November 2017. His first year of senior football brought a regular starting place and a goal in the Copa Libertadores. He joined Real Madrid in 2019.
His introduction to Madrid was immediate: he scored on his debut against Osasuna in September 2019. That November, he scored a hat-trick in a 6–0 Champions League win over Galatasaray.
On 4 May 2022, he transformed a Champions League semi-final after coming off the bench against Manchester City. With Madrid two goals behind on aggregate, he scored in the 90th minute and again a minute later to force extra time. Karim Benzema’s penalty then sent Madrid into the final.
He scored both Madrid goals in the 2–1 Copa del Rey final victory over Osasuna in May 2023. In June 2024, he started the Champions League final at Wembley, where Madrid beat Borussia Dortmund 2–0 to win the trophy. He had also won La Liga with Madrid that season.
His senior Brazil debut came in November 2019. At the 2022 World Cup, he appeared in the quarter-final against Croatia, coming on for Vinícius Júnior before Brazil were eliminated on penalties following a 1–1 draw after extra time.
The opening goal of his double at Chelsea in April 2023 shows how his attacking roles connect. UEFA’s technical analysis describes him accelerating past Trevoh Chalobah on the right and playing the ball across goal. He remained available inside the box, received Vinícius Júnior’s pass and finished. His run had begun the attack, but his positioning allowed him to complete it too.
On 2 March 2026 he tore the anterior cruciate ligament and lateral meniscus in his right knee during Real Madrid’s 1–0 defeat by Getafe. The injury ended his 2025/26 season and ruled him out of the 2026 World Cup.
Rodrygo currently plays for Real Madrid as a right winger. He has represented Brazil internationally.
