Profile
Dean Huijsen is a Spain international centre-back whose passing can turn defence into attack. Right-footed but comfortable on the left of a defensive pair, he combines that distribution with a willingness to step forward and challenge opposing forwards.
Born in Amsterdam on 14 April 2005, he developed in Málaga’s academy before joining Juventus’s youth system in 2021. He progressed through the Italian club’s youth and Next Gen teams and made his first-team debut against AC Milan on 22 October 2023.
A loan to Roma followed in January 2024. One glimpse of his attacking ambition came against Frosinone, when he carried the ball from halfway and scored from outside the penalty area. He moved to Bournemouth in July 2024, bringing experience of senior football in Italy to the Premier League.
He established himself in Bournemouth’s defence before Christmas during 2024/25, partnering Illia Zabarnyi. His contribution extended to attacking set pieces: headed goals against Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United and Arsenal showed that opponents also had to account for him in their own penalty area.
Under Andoni Iraola, he followed strikers into midfield to support Bournemouth’s pressing. On the ball, his longer passes often went into the left channel or switched play across the pitch. He could also pass through gaps between opponents, helping the team launch attacks quickly. Together, those habits made him part of the transition from winning possession to using it.
He joined Real Madrid in June 2025 after one season in England. His first appearance came on 18 June against Al Hilal at the Club World Cup, when he started and played the full match in a draw.
His senior Spain debut had come on 20 March 2025, against the Netherlands in a Nations League quarter-final. Less than three months later, he started the final against Portugal on 8 June. Spain drew 2–2 before losing the penalty shootout 5–3. In May 2026 he was left out of Luis de la Fuente’s 26-man squad for the World Cup.
Dean Huijsen currently plays for Real Madrid as a centre-back. He has represented Spain internationally.
