Profile
Isco is a Spanish attacking midfielder whose passing depends on awareness of the players around him. His first touch prepares the next action, while a reverse pass lets him find a teammate behind him without simply playing the ball straight ahead.
Born in Benalmádena, he played for Retamar and Atlético Benamiel before entering Valencia's youth system at 14. He reached Valencia's first team in the Copa del Rey, then joined Málaga in 2011. There, his development became visible on a European stage as Málaga reached the Champions League quarter-finals in 2013.
That breakthrough extended to international football. Isco made his senior Spain debut against Uruguay in February 2013, then helped the under-21 side win its European Championship that June. He scored a penalty in the 4–2 final victory over Italy. He later played for Spain at the 2018 World Cup.
Real Madrid agreed his transfer in June 2013, beginning a nine-year spell. His 2017 UEFA Super Cup performance offers a clear example of his combination play: he exchanged passes with Gareth Bale and finished Madrid's second goal in a 2–1 win over Manchester United. He also received the match's individual award.
After a spell with Sevilla, Isco joined Real Betis in July 2023. His contribution to the 2025 Conference League final showed how a team could use his passing in its wider attacking plan. Betis kept him central when pressing high, with wide players ready to receive when possession changed hands.
Against Chelsea in that final, he controlled the ball, checked his surroundings and found Abde Ezzalzouli with a reverse pass for the opening goal. UEFA's technical observers highlighted that sequence of touch, scan and delivery. Betis ultimately lost 4–1, but the move illustrated Isco's particular craft: using awareness and a reverse pass to turn a recovered ball into a chance.
In August 2025 he fractured his left fibula in Betis's last pre-season friendly, against Málaga. He returned that November but went off injured early against Utrecht, and in December he had arthroscopic surgery on his right ankle. He did not play again until April 2026 and was not part of Spain's squad at that summer's World Cup.
