Profile
David Soria's route to elite football was unusually steep. The Madrid-born goalkeeper played in Spain's third tier during 2015/16 before Sevilla put him in goal for its Europa League knockout run. Within months, decisions he had made in lower-division matches had to hold up with a European final at stake.
In the April 2016 quarter-final against Athletic Club, Soria saved Beñat Etxebarria's shootout attempt and Sevilla converted all five of its kicks. The save did not win the tie alone, but it shows a goalkeeper's burden in a shootout: one intervention can turn a narrow margin into qualification.
The following month he started the final against Liverpool. He left his line quickly to block Daniel Sturridge before Sevilla recovered from a goal down to win 3–1. That was more than a reflex save on the goal line: Soria judged when to close the space in front of him. The comeback gave him a part in Sevilla's 2016 European title.
Soria moved from Sevilla to Getafe in 2018. LaLiga credited him with 102 saves in his first league season there, as Getafe conceded 35 league goals and finished fifth in 2018/19. Behind a compact back line, he dealt with the shots that got through. It was a season-long test of repeated decisions, different from Sevilla's shorter European run.
An early example came against Alavés in September 2018, when he saved a penalty to help Getafe take a point. That incident and the Athletic shootout explain why his career cannot be reduced to clean sheets: he could preserve a result after the defence had no further cover.
Getafe's 2019/20 Europa League run also showed the limits of that role. Against Inter in August 2020, Soria stopped a Lautaro Martínez shot after a defensive error, yet Getafe lost 2–0 and exited. Across his Sevilla and Getafe chapters, the thread is a keeper able to intervene when the structure in front of him breaks.
Soria remained at Getafe in the seasons that followed. Against Osasuna in August 2026 he made his 193rd consecutive LaLiga start, breaking Juan Antonio Larrañaga's league record of 192; the run had begun at Valencia in August 2021.
David Soria currently plays for Getafe as a goalkeeper.
