Profile
Career & playing style
Miguel Gutiérrez is a left-footed defender whose attacking value goes beyond reaching the byline. A Bundesliga assessment describes a left-back who moves into central buildup positions as an extra playmaker. That gives his team another passing route through midfield, while his wide positioning offers crosses.
He developed in Real Madrid's academy. In August 2020 he scored as Madrid beat Benfica in the UEFA Youth League final. He made his first-team debut against Cádiz in April 2021. Madrid won the 2021–22 league and Champions League titles with Gutiérrez part of the senior squad.
Gutiérrez moved to Girona in August 2022. Against Slovan Bratislava in October 2024, he finished a cross in Girona's first Champions League win. UEFA's technical observers also highlighted his forward progressions and high ball recoveries. That match showed an attacking full-back contributing both to buildup and to pressure after possession was lost.
Spain selected him for the Paris Olympics in 2024. He came off the bench against the Dominican Republic on 27 July and scored in a group-stage win. He also entered the final against France in extra time as Spain won gold.
Napoli signed him permanently from Girona in August 2025. His season in Italy added Serie A and Champions League experience, and he was part of Napoli's Italian Super Cup-winning team in December 2025. Napoli and Bayer Leverkusen announced his permanent move to Germany on 5 August 2026.
A September 2026 league match against RB Leipzig illustrated his two attacking lanes. From the left, Gutiérrez crossed for Patrik Schick's opening goal. Later he collected a half-clearance and finished low at the near post. The first action was service from the flank; the second was an arrival in scoring space.
From Madrid's academy through Girona and Napoli to Leverkusen, Gutiérrez has blended defensive duties with creative work. Moving inside helps link play; staying wide creates a delivery angle; advancing beyond the ball can turn him into a finisher.
