Profile
Álex Remiro is a Spanish goalkeeper from Cascante whose route to senior international football passed through Athletic Club's youth system and loan spells in the second division. His career illustrates two different sides of goalkeeping: influencing how a team moves the ball upfield and supporting the goalkeeper chosen ahead of him when a trophy is at stake.
His distribution can change where a match is contested. Analysing Real Sociedad's March 2025 Europa League draw with Manchester United, UEFA highlighted the long passes played by Remiro and André Onana. Sending the ball beyond the first press moves the contest towards aerial challenges and loose balls. It also carries a risk: United recovered one of Remiro's goal kicks and built the move for Joshua Zirkzee's goal. The kick and the team's response to the next ball have to work together.
Remiro developed through Basconia and Bilbao Athletic before loans at Levante in 2016 and Huesca in 2017. The Huesca spell brought a much larger role, as he helped the club reach the top flight for the first time. Yet he left Athletic without an official first-team appearance, joining Real Sociedad in July 2019 after a route that had offered more opportunities away from his parent club.
A defining return to face Athletic came in the delayed 2019/20 Copa del Rey final on 3 April 2021. Remiro started for Sociedad as Mikel Oyarzabal's penalty settled the game. The pandemic had pushed the final into the following season.
His Spain debut followed in March 2024, when he played the second half of the friendly against Colombia in London. That summer he belonged to Spain's European Championship-winning squad without appearing in the finals. He was omitted from Spain's announced 2026 World Cup squad.
Sociedad's April 2026 Copa del Rey victory supplied another example of a different contribution. Remiro was an unused substitute in the final against Atlético Madrid, with Unai Marrero making the decisive shootout saves. Marrero afterwards explained that Remiro had offered advice before the penalties. The final's individual award went to Marrero.
Álex Remiro currently plays for Real Sociedad as a goalkeeper. He has represented Spain internationally.
