Profile
Jon Mikel Aramburu Mejías is a Caracas-born Venezuelan defender whose clearest role is on the right of a back four. In that position, he can challenge for possession and then help turn a recovery into a way forward. At the 2024 Copa América, that combination was visible in both his tackling and the attacking moves he helped start.
He developed at Deportivo La Guaira before moving to Spain with Real Unión in August 2022. A season in the Primera Federación gave him a route into Spanish football without skipping its lower divisions. Real Sociedad signed him from the Irun club in August 2023, and he played for its reserve side, Sanse, as well as beginning his first-team career.
Aramburu made his Real Sociedad first-team debut on 1 November 2023. By January 2025, the club described him as established in Imanol Alguacil's starting side. That rise matters because his right-back role had moved from reserve-team development to regular top-flight work, while he also gained Europa League experience.
Venezuela offered a different stage in 2024. Aramburu started the Copa América quarter-final against Canada at right-back. Competition organisers credited him with heavy defensive work in that game and selected him in their quarter-final team. His clearance also began the move that Salomón Rondón finished for Venezuela's equaliser. Canada eventually advanced on penalties.
The tournament was more than one standout match. He finished as its leading tackler and supplied two assists. Those figures explain the dual demands of his position: contesting possession on one phase, then providing a route forward once it changes hands. His contributions were not confined to defending his own box.
Another landmark came with Real Sociedad's 2025–26 Copa del Rey title. Aramburu started the final against Atlético de Madrid on 18 April 2026 and played into extra time before being substituted. Sociedad won on penalties. The trophy added a major club achievement to the international tournament experience already on his record.
Jon Aramburu currently plays for Real Sociedad as a right-back. He has represented Venezuela internationally.
