Profile
Career & playing style
Mikel Oyarzabal is a Spanish forward whose movement brings him from the edge of an attack into its finishing positions. Left-footed, he emerged on the left flank but looked for space closer to goal. His late arrivals in the penalty area give a passer a moving target, rather than a striker already waiting beside a defender.
Born in Eibar, Oyarzabal began with his hometown club before entering Real Sociedad’s youth system. He progressed through the reserve side and made his senior debut against Levante on 25 October 2015, coming on during a 4–0 league win under David Moyes. He then established himself under Eusebio Sacristán; a headed winner against Barcelona in April 2016 showed another way he could finish an attack.
His place in Real Sociedad’s history acquired a defining moment on 3 April 2021. Oyarzabal converted the penalty that beat Athletic Club 1–0 in the delayed 2020 Copa del Rey final. A derby settled by that single kick delivered the club’s first major trophy in 34 years, with Oyarzabal captaining the winning side.
For Spain, the decisive moment at EURO 2024 came in a different form. Introduced for Álvaro Morata in the final against England, he met Marc Cucurella’s cross in the 86th minute to secure a 2–1 victory. The finish offered a clear example of his value inside the box: getting onto the delivery and completing an attack created from wide.
He added another Copa del Rey in April 2026. Against Atlético Madrid, his penalty restored Real Sociedad’s lead before half-time, but the match eventually finished 2–2 after extra time. He had already been substituted when his teammates won the shoot-out.
The same year brought a World Cup title with Spain. Oyarzabal scored five goals during the tournament and started the final against Argentina on 19 July 2026. Ferran Torres replaced him and scored the extra-time winner in a 1–0 victory, adding a world title to Oyarzabal’s European championship success.
