Profile
Career & playing style
Jan Virgili's main attacking route begins on the left. He takes a defender on, uses pace to gain room, then chooses between a shot and a pass. In a Mallorca interview he described the one-on-one duel and setting up a teammate as central to his game. A December 2025 chance at Valencia shows the pattern: he drove forward, cut inside and forced a save.
Virgili developed through several Catalan youth sides before joining Gimnàstic de Tarragona. Barcelona brought him into its under-19 team in July 2024. His first season there led to a January 2025 debut for Barça Atlètic, the reserve side. Playing for the under-19s and the reserves in the same season gave him a youth title campaign and a first step into senior football.
In April 2025, he finished a team move against Stuttgart in the UEFA Youth League quarter-final. Barcelona went on to win the competition, and Virgili entered the final against Trabzonspor as a second-half substitute but did not score.
Spain's under-19 side gave him another moment that June. Sent on during the semi-final against Germany, Virgili scored the extra-time equaliser and then set up Pablo García's winner in a 6–5 victory. He again came off the bench in the final, where the Netherlands beat Spain 1–0. Spain finished as runner-up.
Barcelona agreed his move to Mallorca in August 2025. There, he stepped into La Liga rather than another youth campaign. In April 2026, he came off the bench against Rayo Vallecano and scored soon after, finishing a delivery from Pablo Torre. The goal shows a second route to goal: besides starting a dribble wide, he can arrive inside the area and finish a teammate's service.
In August 2026 Mallorca confirmed his permanent move to Club Brugge. His career had moved from Catalan youth football to Barcelona's academy, Spain's under-19 side and a senior season in Spain. The recurring choice comes after he gets past his marker: carry into a shooting lane, or use the space created for someone else. The Spain semi-final showed both possibilities in one match.
